Loss of Sites

Boy on scooter

Outdoor recreational spaces have been under threat ever since we were founded in 1925 and in difficult economic times selling a playing field to a developer can seem a quick financial fix. Playing fields are often particularly attractive targets as, unlike brown-field sites, they do no involved an extensive clean up before building can begin.

There are always peaks and troughs in development trends but a steady rise in planning applications to develop playing fields can clearly be seen -  the numbers more than doubled between 1999 and 2009 rising from 625 up to 1322 (DCMS).
